Gethin Rees - Tuba
Gethin left school at 18 to pursue a career in
engineering and during his time as a Mechanical
Engineer was awarded many prizes for excellence
including Young Engineer for Wales in 2002.
However, the draw of music was too strong to
resist and he left his job at Corus in Llanelli
to study tuba with Sean O'Neill at the Royal
Welsh College of Music and Drama.
At the RWCMD Gethin has
the opportunity to work alongside Dr Robert
Childs and Kevin Price, Head of Brass and former
Principal Trombone of the Liverpool Philharmonic
Orchestra, in workshops for children,
introducing them to brass instruments and
encouraging their participation in music making
activities. Also at the RWCMD, Gethin has
performed in masterclasses with James Watson,
Brass10, Timothy Jackson, Alison Balsom, ONYX
Brass and Nigel Seaman.
In addition to his college commitments, Gethin has won the Champion Brass Band of Wales award twice in three years with Bury Port and has made his first appearance in the National Brass Band Competition Finals and the Senior Cup in the British Open Spring Festival. He has been a member of both the National Youth Brass Band of Wales and the National Youth Wind Orchestra of Wales and has been employed as a Brass tutor for Carmarthenshire, Ceredigion and Three Counties Brass Bands.
Gethin Joined Tredegar Brass Band on Solo Eb Bass in 2004 playing with them in the British Open and the All England International Masters and has since performed with the Buy As You View Band and the Cardiff Philharmonic Orchestra. Gethin currently plays Solo Eb Bass for the Cwmaman Institute Silver Band. Last summer he was invited to be a guest soloist with Drogheda Town Band in the Republic of Ireland, and to conduct their Summer Sounds project youth band.
